Here at the caf, what happens at lunch, stays at lunch. (Sadly, this includes most of the food.) Mystery meat, and other such unappealing dishes grace the tables here, and the primary reason students come here at all is to have an hour off with their friends in the middle of the school day.

All right so cafeteria food was not home cooking, but last night no one had had time to make lunches so Penninah had a swipe card to buy a hot lunch on days like this.
Today was macaroni and cheese. That was pretty good. They did not have grapes or mangoes for dessert or anything fancy like that, but they did have cherry jello with fruit cocktail in it, and fruit cocktail had grapes. Penninah got a plate of macaroni and cheese, some jello with fruit, and a container of skim milk. She edged out of the cafeteria line and into the battle ground.
She needed to find a place to sit. She hated the eyes of the skinny girls who always begrudged her every mouthful of food. Penninah hadn't eaten since before seven am, and even her own doctor said she was NOT supposed to starve herself to lose weight. It would only make it harder for the pounds to come off later on. Also there was a very good chance that Penninah was still growing.
Penninah speared some of her macaroni and cheese with a fork. There were three or four good dishes in the cafeteria and this was one of them. The others included tuna casserole, salmon croquettes or loaf, and manicotti. Baked ziti wasn't bad either, and it was not something her mother made at home.
Penninah picked up the book on her tray. It was a free reading assignment for English. It was Of Love and Dust by Ernest Gaines. The librarian had recommended it, and it was pretty good. Penninah thought of the quote by Mark Twain: "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend and inside a dog, it's too dark to read." Well thankfully no one had turned the lights off in the cafeteria.
((Please interrupt Penninah.))

Cari sat down at a table. Alone. Not that she minded really. She took out her Ipod, and began to listen to it. Cari reached into her backpack and pulled out her lunch. Her mom always insisted that the family chef make her meals, but ever since she was 11, Cari had rejected. The meals were to fancy for her taste. Todays packed lunch was noodles with cheese sprinkled over the top. She also had a Pepsi, a Snickers Bar, an Apple and hand sanitiser to use when she was done eating.

Penninah saw the other girl eating alone. She wondered if she would like company. How did one just go over and plot oneself at someone else' table? Penninah pondered this. She didn't want the other girl to think of her as rude or imposing herself, but it would be awful nice to have company.
Well, nothing ventured nothing gained. Penninah picked up her tray and her book and walked over toward's Cari's table. She noticed those stupid buds stuck in her ears. This was not going to be easy.
"Do you mind if I join you?" Penninah asked.
