The only thing Meri knew about anime was that they sold related merchandise at Hot Topic, her favorite hangout at the mall. Welcome wasn't exactly the best word she could have used to describe how she'd felt upon arriving here, but she didn't have much choice but to stick around and hope things improved. She lugged her backpack up the stairs, right on the heels of the boy who'd grabbed her suitcase.

Jay smirked slightly as he saw what his sister was doing. His face soon dropped back into an emotionless mask as he picked his own bags up and started to follow the others upstairs. Cai quickly grabbed Meri's bag out of Keal's hand and started for her own room, hoping that the girl would follow her.
Keal blinked in surprise for a moment before shrugging and motioning for Jay to follow him to the empty bedroom. The room was bare, the walls weren't decorated, there was a TV and a DVD player, a desk, a dresser, and a bed. Keal looked at Jay apologetically, "Mom and Dad didn't even tell us you were going to be a boy or a girl, they wanted to surprise us."
"They wanted to surprise you with a new family member your own age?" Jay couldn't keep the surprise out of his voice.
Keal smiled, for the first time since the arrival, a real one, "No one ever said we were a normal family. We're far from a normal family. Technically we aren't even a family." Keal turned and walked out the door, he only paused long enough to call back, "I'm down the hall and to the left, if you need me!"

Meri wasn't sure where she was going, so she wasn't about to argue with Cai and wander off in some random direction. She followed the girl in the direction indicated, hoping that maybe things would turn out better this time than they had the last. Maybe if she put up with this girl's overwhelming cheer and her brother's seeming tactlessness, she and Jay could prove their self-sufficience and...Meri sighed again. Who was she kidding? The state obviously didn't think they'd be all right on their own, but that wasn't about to stop Meri from hoping, even if she knew it would in all likelihood never amount to anything. She gave her backpack a fierce tug, adjusting it on her shoulder, and gritted her teeth. She wouldn't give up, and that was all there was to it. Never.

Cai led Meri into her dark purple room. Wall scrolls decorated the walls, glow in the dark stars covered the room from floor to ceiling, and there was clutter all over the desk tops. It was Cai's room. She didn't really keep things clean, there wasn't a reason. Clutter showed love in this family.
"It's a bit of a mess, but hopefully you won't be staying in here too long," Cai informed the girl. She stood for a moment, when Jay appeared in the doorway. He had dropped his stuff and come to check on his sister.

Meri observed her surroundings with something akin to astonishment. "You don't get punished for keeping your room a mess?" she asked, aghast. It seemed as if that had been one of the chief sore points with her and every place she and Jay had lived so far...she was not naturally a neat person, and adults seemed to despise that in her no matter how generous they were in other respects. Which to date hadn't been that generous at all, but who could blame them? Meri was far from easy to live with.
She turned to Jay, who had arrived in the doorway. "Hey," she said, "What's your room like?"

Cai grinned at her new foster sister, "As long as you can sort of see the floor mom doesn't really care. She thinks that a messy house shows love." Brown eyes twinkled as she surveyed her room. "Though I think I'll take some of the dishes downstairs in a bit," she added as an after thought.
Jay stood behind the two girls surveying the room quietly. It was messy but homey. Silently he wished he could have a place like this, but knew it wouldn't happen. At his sister's words he shrugged, "Empty." His green eyes turned to focus on the other teen, "Your brother said something about technically not being a family?" His voice was low and hesitant. Normally he wouldn't have asked, but they were going to be living together for atleast a few days.
Cai scowled, "Technically we are... it was made official years ago!" Sensing confusion rather than seeing it she explained, "We're adopted. Tis why Keal and I look more like you two than we do Mom and Dad." With a small grin she asked, "Where else would we have gotten our black hair?"

"Messy house always showed laziness, according to my last foster bit- er, mom." Meri replied, "Not that I really ended up caring much for her opinion, but that was it." She shut her mouth, abruptly falling silent. It wasn't like her to start going over her past, and she certainly wasn't going to change now just because a messy room happened to be acceptable.
Cai went on to explain the adoption issue, ending with a comment which caused Meri to raise a skeptical eyebrow. "Are you trying to say we're related?" she asked, knowing full well that wasn't the case. "Not likely, if you're asking my opinion. Which I know you're not, but anyhow."

Cai shook her head, "I wasn't trying to say that, I was just telling you that we look more alike than Mom and Dad." She smiled and moved towards her desk to grab a notebook and two DVDs. "I'll get out of your hair now. If you need me I'm down the hall in Keal's room. Annoying him to death," she informed the siblings as she turned and walked out of the room and down the hall.
Jay looked around the room before taking a seat on the bed. "She seems... hyper," Jay comented quietly from where he had taken a seat. He watched his sister for her reaction, the girl was usually very visual when responding to him.

Meri waved to Cai in an exaggerated 'bye bye' gesture. She rolled her eyes again. "Hyper is putting it mildly. I'll be lucky if I get out of here with my sanity intact. That is, if I don't kill her first and get thrown in the slammer. Not that it would be a lot worse than juvi." That was a stretch...Meri had only spent two weeks in juvi, but for some reason, she acted like she was proud of the fact that she was only fifteen and already had a criminal record. It had only been for shoplifting, but still...

A week had passed since the two new family members had moved in and so far life had been okay. It was shaky, but the family was learning to live in peace and only had a few small spats.
With a crash the afternoon started, "Keal!"
"Cai!"
"Jerk! You-"
"And you dumped cold water on me!"
"You wouldn't get up!"
"Cold water!"
The fight ended when a shout came from down the hall, "Shut up! Some of us are trying to sleep!" Jay was never very pleasant when woken up and especially when waking to fighting.
