Graduation requirements at Bowie High are fairly basic... To graduate students need:
4 years of English (may include English electives)
4 years of Social Studies or History (may include some electives)
3 years of Science
3 years of a foreign language
2 years of mathematics
At least two half year electives per year. Such subjects as art, home ec, shop, agriculture etc... are half year electives.
4 years of PE.
Students are of course free to take more academic courses than what is required and the high school offers AP courses for junior and senior years. AP courses are college level and have an exam in May to determine of those taking them get college credit. With AP's it is possible for a student to finish his first semester or even first year of college while still in high school.
AP courses include everything from English and foreign languages to calculs and chemistry. There is European history and American history and possibly psychology and sociology.
Students can also be one year ahead in math, science, and foreign language. This makes them eligible to take many of the AP course offerings in those areas. Bowie High Shcool pays the fee for all students to take the AP exam in May. Students may also take courses at the local community college, though the AP credit is more likely to be accepted any where.
Students must carry five full courses plus two half year electives (one in the fall and one in the spring) plus PE their freshman and sophomore years. Students must carry four full courses plus two half year electives (one fall and one spring) plus PE their junior and senior years.
If students fill a requirement and don't want to continue in an academic subject, they may substitute vocational courses, less rigorous academic offerings, or two half year eletcives for the missing course.
You can pick whatever foreign language you want. The same is true for electives. English and social studies will be partially on the elective system and you can make up what you want for your character.
This is a typical college entrance sequence for kids who don't give up on their academics. This student is not a year ahead in any of his/her courses. You can vary this schedule depending on your character's age and attitude toward academics and whether he or she started high school courses in middle school or took summer courses.

Courses that include electives allow students to specialize. British Literature is an example of an English elective. Human Development is either a lesser academic offering or a half year social studies elective. OK, be creative and have fun. And let's see some posts.
